Welcome To Kintyre , Gateway To The Isles
Kintyre is Scotland's only mainland island (well almost), joined only to the mainland by a very short stretch of land between Tarbert (Loch Fyne) 's East Loch and West Loch.
Kintyre is a small but perfectly formed peninsula, made famous by Sir Paul McCartney's song Mull of Kintyre. You can find the words to the song Mull Of Kintyre here which links to the bottom of this page. The Mull Of Kintyre sits at the very bottom of Kintyre, although the scenes in the video for the song were actually shot at Saddell.
Kintyre is the Gateway To The Isles. The isles of Gigha, Islay and Arran are all connected by car and passenger ferries provided by Caledonian MacBrayne. Tayinloan links Kintyre to Gigha, Claonaig (near Skipness) links Kintyre to Arran and Kennacraig (just south of Tarbert) links Kintyre to Islay and Jura.
Tarbert is the recommended location to stop if you are looking to take the ferry to any of the islands off of Kintyre, with the ferry to Islay within 15 minutes drive of Tarbert, Claonaig within 25 minutes drive from Tarbert and the Gigha ferry only 30 minutes drive from Tarbert.
The main towns and villages in Kintyre are Campbeltown and Tarbert, although smaller places are just as popular and attractive such as Carradale, Muasdale and Skipness. Click on our Places section to find out more in our mini tour or Kintyre.
Machrihanish at the southern end of Kintyre is well known for its fantastic championship golf course and the air base that U.S. forces once operated from. Machrihanish has one of the longest runways in the UK!

Golf
Kintyre is a popular destination for golfers to play some challenging courses from the small bunker free 9 hole course of Tarbert, to the superb Championship 18 hole links course at Machrihanish. Kintyre golf courses are also close together so you may be able to play more than one in a day, 18 holes before lunch and 18 after.
Golf courses featured on this site include Tarbert, Carradale, Dunaverty and Machrihanish plus a guide to other courses locally or within a short drive or ferry travel to one of the nearby islands.

Helping Promote Local Food & Produce
Kintyre has a prominent agricultural and farming industry, producing grains, vegetables and livestock for use and consumption both locally and further afield. Kintyre really does produce some fine fresh and unpolluted produce available to buy from local butchers and bakers, or alternatively can be purchased direct from farmers and producers throughout the peninsula.
Some producers such as Ifferdale Farm near Carradale can also deliver their produce fresh to your door if you live locally.
