The 'Wee Toon' of Campbeltown in the southern part of Kintyre was originally known as Kinlochkilkerran and renamed in the 17th century.
Campbeltown was an important centre for shipbuilding and for whisky, although it is the fishing industry that has thrived here. Once containing 34 producing distilleries and actively visited by Steam boats from the Clyde, Campbeltown was back then a massive producer of malt whisky.
Today however this is reduced to under five distilleries, Springbank being the most recognisable malt brand. The song ' Campbeltown Loch' pays homage to the whisky trade of the past.
Campbeltown's museum contains a collection of items from its past.
Campbeltown is host to the Mull Of Kintyre music festival which always has a nationally recognised headline band.
In 2006 Campbeltown welcomed the opening of the Aquilibrium replacing the old swimming pool. Argyll FM is based in Campbeltown and can be received locally on 106.5 - 107.7. Argyll FM is not digitally broadcast on the internet.
There are notable people associated with Campbeltown, of course probably the most famous, Paul McCartney, who wrote and sang the Mull Of Kintyre song, is still thought to own large amounts of land in the area.
Between Campbeltown and Machrihanish lies Machrihanish Air Force Base, once utilised by American Forces during the Gulf War features one of the longest runways in Britain. The Air Force Base, now Machrihanish Airport flies in and out to and from Glasgow on a daily basis*.
